Danny dyers face

Has anyone else noticed that Danny Dyers face is always bleeding in his films?

I’ve only seen a couple of his movies when I had realised this so I actively made the decision to find more movies to see how true this is.

So far so bleedy…

I would have assumed  that when he starts a new movie or is getting ready in make up he probably has his own fake blood, or feels naked without it lol.

My top films

top30

Time to reveal my GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) movies.. in the most complicated way I know how!

I’m guessing I will get asked this more often now that I am attempting to write this blog. I’ve been asked a million times previously and I probably give a slightly different answer each time. I just love too many damned movies! So I’m going to break things down..

There will be three sections to this

  • Films that have really changed my life, (GOAT) my greatest of all time (top 30).
  • Films I can watch repeatedly and usually forget when listing a GOAT list but really should get a mention because I can’t live without them (top 100).
  • Films that I defend and should have some recognition (top 250).

Lets start with the more important  (the other lists will follow).. My GOAT list, in no particular order.

    • Orlando (1992)

    • In the aftermath angles never sleep (1988)

    •  Le Pacte des loups – Brotherhood of the wolf (2001)

    • Crna mačka, beli mačor – Black Cat White Cat (1998)

    • Death Machine (1994)

    • Hardware (1990)

    • Akira (1988)

    • Dune (1984)

    • Amadeus (1984)

    • The Thing (1982)

    • Jakpae – City of Violence (2006)

    • Bittersweet Life (2005)

    • Taxidermia (2006)

    • Angel Heart (1987)

    • Blade Runner (1982)

    • Delicastessen (1991)

    • Cronos (1993)

    • The Crow (1994)

    • Hannibal (2001)

    • Gladiator (2000)

    • Excalibur (1981)

    • Se7en (1995)

    • Fahrenheit 451 (1966)

    • Un prophète – A Prophet (2009)

    • Robocop (1987)

    • Carandiru  (2003)

    • This Years Love (1999)

    • Quai des Orfèvres – 36 (2004)

    • Die Hard (1988)

    • Mad Max (1979)

That was pretty painful… I guess I could name 100 movies I’d like to add to this on a daily basis… I think I’ll feel more comfortable with a top 100 list or 250.

I’ll leave the justification of these movies to another post. Looking at it the list is quite commercial and doesn’t really reflect my collection but these movies have all affected me deeply in some way.

Lovefilm Rentals

As much as I loved the lovefilm service, there are aspects of it that remind me of a psychotic ex boyfriend…
lovefilm_logo
For some time I had an active account with lovefilm. They were really good with the promotional goods and freebies then I messed up. I lost a disc, I really have no idea how I lost a disc in the first place, you take it out of the player and put it away right?
Well either way they were quite helpful, I just had to fill out a form online to admit my retarded act, rather than admitting it over the phone, paid my £10 fine and a new disc on the way. Oopps
Lovefilm 1-0 Me
For the price and the delivery time I had only one disc at a time option, I still buy movies, pick up rentals at blockbuster’s and at the time choices, so this was just another filler for me which brough some really rare and interesting films into my life for which I really appreciated the service.
Lovefilm 2 – 0 Me
During this time I had several “sign your friends up” kits, it made me feel used, like I was now their bitch, recruiting more for the cult. I imagined myself knocking on myneighbours door, “could you spare some time for lovefilmin your life?” Needles to say the cards came in handy for spreading glue, that was it.
Lovefilm 2 – 1 Me
Then another boo boo, I posted my disc, awaiting another one from my list and I received nothing for ages… So I checked the site and they hadn’t received anything. I filled out the form, told them it was posted, told to await a call.. Nothing!! So I called them, explained the situation, we will get back to you.. Ok
In the meantime I cancelled my direct debit because this went on for months
..
Eventually I got a call when they tried to take their cash… We cant send your next disc until the disc is sent back, but I reported it as missing, paid my £10 and have been waiting two months, oh yeah sorry about that..
O.o
Lovefilm 2 – 2 Me
So I kept things up for a while, then decided as my job was on the line I had to cancel the few luxuries I had.. This process took three days with lovefilm trying to find reasons for us to stay together…(psycho ex boyfriend syndrome stage 1)  basically every time I tried to cancel things online I was given a number to call WHAT? I can’t do this online!?!? So I called the number and was put on hold for hours, literally hours! Great customer service guys, I know you want me to stay on as your loyal customer but if I need to go then please just let me go..
Lovefilm 2 – 3 Me
So eventually on my lunch break I get through on the phone!! I get asked why I’m leaving, if I thought of any alternative services they can help me with, blah blah.. NO I WANT TO CANCEL MY SERVICE PLEASE!! Okay but it take a month to cancel L fine I’ll pay you an extra month without the ability to rent any DVD’s!?!?!?
Lovefilm 2 – 4 Me
So I sit around and watch my money going on a service I can’t use, then one day a few months later someone asks for a list of DVD’s so they can get me a birthday present..instantly I think Amazon Wishlist! But I also remembered the epic list I had on lovefilm and amazingly it’s still there.. like a psycho ex boyfriend just waiting for me to come back.
Lovefilm 2 – 5 Me.

Movies that actually scare me.. a short list…

I always hear people complaining that horror movies don’t manage to scare thehorrorthem anymore, which for the large part is true, but every now and again a story or film will crack our tough exterior and we find ourselves sleeping with the lights on.

I’m a huge horror enthusiast, but the thrill that I’m looking for is something that really gets under my skin, something to pry into my psyche and give me a few grey hairs. There are movies which play on our phobias, childhood fears, the unknown and ultimately dying and death itself which are big winners for scaring an audience.

The biggest market is that of gore, slasher and jump/shock tactics. These tools are most widely used by directors and writers to get our adrenaline running. The flip side to this is by making the movie very real true crimes or horrific events can easily unnerve an audience. Defining horror is something I’ve been doing over a number of year and articles so I’ll leave this for another day, but it’s very easy to realise that fear is a personal  matter and not something that we can predict.

Its quite odd, but not every movie that will scare you are even be horror. If you have a phobia of falling then a lot of action movies will make you wet your pants, something simple like Watership Down (1978) will scare anyone with leporiphobia. And the list goes on with personal quirks and histories.

Without further ado, here’s my list of movies that have at some point made me sleep with the lights on…and maybe they still do?

Twilight Zone the MovieTwilight zone the movie (1983)

This movie has frightened me all of my life, when I was little I was exposed to all movies, my mother and babysitter didn’t have any problems with me picking what I wanted from the movie van/shop and that’s how we rolled in the 80’s, but I think some movies that I couldn’t comprehend had a lasting effect on me. This is one of them. The white rabbit from hell and the gremlin from hell, the little boy from hell, Dan Akroyed is obviously from hell and no matter when this film will guarantee me a nightmare or two and a higher electricity bill. It’s strange to think that as an adult this movie still scares me but there is obviously something on a deeper level that it affects me, an inert fear maybe? and usually if I’ve accidentally stumbled upon it then I resemble the frightened flight passenger (John Lithgow) myself…

klownsKiller Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Another old school favorite of my mother. I can watch this during the day and might be OK by the evening.. I really don’t like the clowns and no amount of comedy popcorn is going to ease that fear. I suppose it’s quite popular to not like clowns and so I hope a lot of people will identify this terror with me.

Poltergeist (1982)

This movie used to really frighten me on a massive scale as a child, yeah I was about 4-5 when I first saw it and it disrupt my sleep for a while, but after a conversation about special effects I was OK  considering my other favourite movies at the time were, the Thing, Teen Wolf, Nightmare on elm street and Alien, I should have already been desensitized? This is why I find it interesting to discuss movies that make it through a persons tougher exterior  Its little strange things that you wouldn’t always expect. As a child the steak and face pulling did it for me, as an adult the clown scene still freaks me out. Its probably a good time to point out that the clowns arms had to be cut as they were actually strangling the child actor and had become knotted.. Spooky? Yeah it doesn’t make me sleep any easier.

Gremlins (1984)

oh my goth! This movie has terrorized me in the strangest ways over the years. Firstly lets say that I really don’t like little creatures laughing at me while they KILL ME!It really does mess up my day. Sometimes I wonder if audiences really take this in!? They might be “cute” by they are killing you, and laughing at you!

grelimscinema

There are a lot of factors to this, after seeing the movie for the first time and being deeply unsettled, I got left with a babysitter who had the movie poster on the back of the door… I stayed awake ALL night, just in case. If anyone is actually following my blog they might have noticed that I mentioned having this movie still in the wrapper..  I had to buy it.. but I still don’t have the courage to open it.

ชัตเตอร์ กดติดวิญญาณ – Shutter (2004)

for years I had no movie scares, shutter it was my biggest dry spell, now its not to say I hadn’t been affected by a movie in all this time. But nothing really affected me. Until shutter, this movie is so good, it really draws you in and has so many shocks and tension. The best thing is that ultimately there is.. I don’t want to give anything away… Lets say it has a lasting effect. I don’t know if it was just the movie or the fact that my other half was sitting next to me freaking out that really did it for me?

Rec (2007)

after shutter I went to see rec. I hadn’t seen anything l like this before, I adore the religious aspect of the “zombies” and as much as I was in awe I was also kacking my pants. It is an entertaining movie and I love the shocks and scares, there were a few areas of research that i looked into afterwards and I managed to track down Javier Botep who is an amazing guy and has a great YouTube channel.

rec spanish horror movie

Rec 2 (2009)

Now I was expecting that part two would try to out scare part one.. and it did! I got it from Blockbusters during the evening but kept hold of it until the following morning so I had the day to get it out of my system before bed.. but it didn’t work!? They managed to outdo themselves, which pleased and distressed me, apart from the awesome firework comedy death scene.. that did lighten the mood for me a little but I do remember not being able to laugh about it for a few days after.

rec2

It might sound strange but lets hope I can add to this list at some point! I am expecting  Mama (2013) to be able to rock my socks if just a little bit..

banshee chapterBanshee Chapter (2013)

A perfect blend of an old hobby and something I would love to try, makes me a very nervous girl. So this remake of HP Lovecraft’s From Beyond mixes the idea that a DMT trip while listening to a certain radio station will open a portal into another dimension, either way the movie has a profound effect on me and really hit home that classic HP Lovecraft link that any random events might just open a portal into the unknown, so what do you do, live your life in a cave or experiment? Terrifying visuals and a sinking feeling of dread about my hobbies colliding really set me off when I first saw this…

30 Day Horror Movie Challenge!

Nightmare01

Day 1- your first horror movie- this would be Nightmare On Elm Street (1984), I was about 5 or 6 when i first saw it and it was an instant favourite (yes my mother was a bit oddball) but i handled it well BOYAKA!!

Day2- the last horror movie you saw in the theater – I think that would be Trollhunter (2010), certainly made me a bit icky. I absolutley love this film it really should be in my top 30.

Day 3- favorite classic horror movie – probably a hammer horror…Oh I dunno this will be a toughy how about Night of the Demon (1957). Night of the Demon

Day 4- a horror movie you thought you’d love and didn’t – most after dark movies….if I had to name and shame, maybe the Rite (2011). I made the fatal error of buying before I watched it, I thought with Anthony Hopkins, Exorcisms and a good supporting cast it couldn’t be bad.. *sigh*

Day5- favorite horror remake – is there such a thing? Oh yeah the Thing (1982)!

Day 6- favorite vampire movie – oh man! I really do detest vampire in general I’m much more of a werewolf kinda girl unless the vampire is Chris Lee. But there have been a few good Vamp flicks in the past.. and for this I’d have to choose the Lost Boys (1987) or Daybreakers (2009) for it’s alternative styling?!

Day 7- a horror movie you think no one has seenSkinned Deep (2004) and everyone should watch it. No I couldn’t recommend a movie, only give my opinion. I really did like the crazyness of it, like Killer X/Natural Selection/Monster Hunter(1999) it just tells a story and doesn’t care what anything thinks about the process.

rec spanish horror movie

Day 8- favorite foreign horror – I don’t like the term foreign movie, every movie is foreign to someone.. BUT I’ll go for non English speaking and side with Rec (2007).

Day 9- favorite super natural horror movie – I think I would have to choose Poltergeist (1982).

Day 10- horror movie every one loves but you don’t – this is hard because i love most horror.. or do I?

Dog Soldiers

Day 11- favorite horror/ comedy – I don’t do comedy.. but I do laugh a lot in horror movies, I gotta say House III/The Horror Show(1989) gives me the most giggles but it’s also quite annoying but my choice today goes to Dog Soldiers (2002).

BegottencoverDay 12- your most disturbing horror film– I know a lot of movies that are widely accepted as disturbing and there are some which personally disturb me, some un-nerve due to phobias, childhood experiences etc, but it took me a few attempts to watch this film and it really digs deep the Begotten (1990)

Day 13- favorite zombie movie – I used to adore zombie movies but they are all kinda the same now. We are starting to get some diversity so I’m going to go for a crazy zombie film but one I keep going back to Wild Zero (1999).

wildzero

Day 14- favorite indie horror movie – I adore Independent films, but I don’t know of many horror ones, it’s usually too expensive to use the effects that replace good story telling and acting (JK) I think I’ll watch the Decent (2005).

Day 15- favorite monster movie – I’d like to say Trolljegeren (2010) but I’ve mentioned that sooo.. Lets watch Rogue (2007), it’s not the most dramatic monster movie but it was consistently brutal and Sam Worthington didn’t save the day! thanks giant Croc!

Day 16- horror film with a great soundtrack – I was never a big fan of any of the Underworld (2003) franchise but I picked up the soundtrack due to hearing what I thought was Puscifer and low and behold the OST was better than the films and introduced me to Genghis Tron!

Day 17- favorite 80’s horror – I was a wee bearn in the 1980’s but was regulary exposed to horror movies, for a huge run down on 80’s horror check out this website  80shorrormovies.com! My choice this challenge will be cult classic Waxwork (1988).

notldDay 18- favorite horror movie filmed in black and white – I’m going to be really obvious here and go with something really popular… Night of the Living Dead (1968). I believe that being an independent movie is the reason why this was shot in black and white, but no matter how many remakes this movies has the original shots from this are always the most iconic.

Day 19- best use of gore – Oh man, what is a horror movie without gore!? One of the first movies that comes to mind when gore is mentioned is Braindead/Dead Alive(1992).It has to have some of the best gore and for me the best mass zombie killing scene.. Lawnmover death!braindead

Day 20- favorite horror character –  For me it’s Ashley ‘Ash’ J. Williams from Evil Dead (1981).

Day 21- best horror franchise – There are so many but so many now, a lot of them have a let down movie, I’d like to go with Alien as I adore all of the movies in every way but there are only 4, do you need more for a franchise? also it’s more sci fi than just horror.. Okay it’s going to be a long night.. Omen get’s my vote.

pyramidDay 22-best death scene – NO!!! don’t make me choose one! FINE I’ll go for this one.. brilliant, unexpected and such a timeless classic.. Mr Pyramid Head skinning technique from Silent hill (2006). The only thing missing was him raping the corpse.

Day 23- a great quote from a horror movie – A little quote here from Devil’s Rejects

“Boy, the next word that comes out of your mouth better be some brilliant fuckin’ Mark Twain shit. ‘Cause it’s definitely getting chiseled on your tombstone.”

babyDay 24- horror movie character that describes you – I asked around  I was told by several people i am as annoying as Baby Firefly from House of 1000 Corpses (2003).

Day 25- favorite Christmas/ holiday horror movie – I love how festive movies are all really terrible like Die Hard 2 (1990) but as this is HORROR!! my vote goes to Gremlins (1984)

Day 26- horror movie for a chicken – Any comedy horror movie is really a good place to start for horror pussies  I’m going to chuck in a more recent movie that had no scares what so ever.. Creepshow 3 (2006)

Day 27-your guilty pleasure horror movie – I’m going to get slated for this, but I own House of wax (2005).

Day 28- horror film you’d like to see remade/ rebooted – Now this has got to be quite a passionate request for me, I couldn’t simply ask for a movie to be remade when I don’t really agree with remakes, but I personally would like to see Silent hill (2006) remade and more accurately to the original game, I’d like to see Harry Mason battling things out in the surrealist supernatural psychological survival horror that silent hill should be.

Day 29- worst horror movie – Oh man there are so many of these, I know everyone would probably pick Anaconda (1997) because it was famously bad but I think I’m going to not ruin my night with that again but try Parasomnia (2008).

Day 30- your favorite all time horror movie (or one of 🙂 ) – phhh.. okay just on.. Howling (1981). I love watching this film, I never get bored of it

Independent Films

An independent film, traditionally speaking, is generally referred to as a movie created entirely outside the traditional Hollywood system. It is usually the kind of production where the actors double up as camera men, friends and family provide the bankroll and the director’s mom is in charge of craft services.

40-great-independent-film-posters-1

This will be a hub for all things to do with Independent films, I will hopefully start up a list of films and I’m in the process of updating a short article on the subject.
