LAST NIGHTS MOVIES 29-05-1

2099556

Last night ran into a bit of a late one but sadly not with a whole lot of movie watching  did fit in two movies but one of them was only an hour long! Am I loosing it? I watched ManBorg (2011)  which was surprising good for what it is and that’s a modern b movie pulptastic George jetson nightmare! Ahem.. and Antiviral (2012) which I didn’t get to watch until the very end so that review will be pending BUT the movie is stylish! I adore the feel of it and the man character is Haute Hot! So far a very unusual storey has been introduced about people taking on viruses from their favourite celebrities with a little bit of smuggling going on. It’s something I would expect from the loin of Cronenberg, common themes of viruses and mechanical people from both of these boys! More details to follow…

My top films

top30

Time to reveal my GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) movies.. in the most complicated way I know how!

I’m guessing I will get asked this more often now that I am attempting to write this blog. I’ve been asked a million times previously and I probably give a slightly different answer each time. I just love too many damned movies! So I’m going to break things down..

There will be three sections to this

  • Films that have really changed my life, (GOAT) my greatest of all time (top 30).
  • Films I can watch repeatedly and usually forget when listing a GOAT list but really should get a mention because I can’t live without them (top 100).
  • Films that I defend and should have some recognition (top 250).

Lets start with the more important  (the other lists will follow).. My GOAT list, in no particular order.

    • Orlando (1992)

    • In the aftermath angles never sleep (1988)

    •  Le Pacte des loups – Brotherhood of the wolf (2001)

    • Crna mačka, beli mačor – Black Cat White Cat (1998)

    • Death Machine (1994)

    • Hardware (1990)

    • Akira (1988)

    • Dune (1984)

    • Amadeus (1984)

    • The Thing (1982)

    • Jakpae – City of Violence (2006)

    • Bittersweet Life (2005)

    • Taxidermia (2006)

    • Angel Heart (1987)

    • Blade Runner (1982)

    • Delicastessen (1991)

    • Cronos (1993)

    • The Crow (1994)

    • Hannibal (2001)

    • Gladiator (2000)

    • Excalibur (1981)

    • Se7en (1995)

    • Fahrenheit 451 (1966)

    • Un prophète – A Prophet (2009)

    • Robocop (1987)

    • Carandiru  (2003)

    • This Years Love (1999)

    • Quai des Orfèvres – 36 (2004)

    • Die Hard (1988)

    • Mad Max (1979)

That was pretty painful… I guess I could name 100 movies I’d like to add to this on a daily basis… I think I’ll feel more comfortable with a top 100 list or 250.

I’ll leave the justification of these movies to another post. Looking at it the list is quite commercial and doesn’t really reflect my collection but these movies have all affected me deeply in some way.

Movies that actually scare me

I always hear people complaining that horror movies don’t manage to scare thehorrorthem anymore, which for the large part is true, but every now and again a story or film will crack our tough exterior and we find ourselves sleeping with the lights on.

I’m a huge horror fan, but the thrill that I’m looking for is something that really gets under my skin, there are movies which play on our phobias, childhood fears, the unknown and ultimately dying and death itself.

The biggest market is that of gore, slasher and shock tactics. These tools are most widley used by directors and writers to get our adrenalin running. The flip side to this is by making the movie very real or making a movie about real life events. I dont really count these as horror but if it scares you, then its easy enough to make that mistake.

All said and done its not always that predictable to know which movies will make you dread the night but you’ll certainly renember them afterwards.

Its quite odd, but not every movie that will scare you are even be horror. If you have a phobia of falling then a lot of action movies will make you wet your pants, something simple like Watership Down (1978) will scare anyone with a phobia of rabbits…

Here’s my list of movies that constantly make me sleep with the lights on…

Twilight zone the movie (1983)

220px-TwilightZoneMovePoster

this movie has frightened me all of my life, when I was little I was exposed to all movies, my mother and babysitter didn’t have any problems with me picking what I wanted from the movie van or shop, but I think some movies that I couldn’t comprehend had a lasting effect on me. This is one of them. The white rabbit from hell and the gremlin from hell on the plane will guarantee nightmare, a jumpy persona and a higher electricity bill always. It’s strange to think that as an adult this movie still scares me but there is obviously something on a deeper level that it affects me, an inert fear maybe? and usually if I’ve accidentally stumbled upon it then I resemble the frightened flight passenger (John Lithgow) myself…

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) – another old school favorite of my mother. I can watch this during the day and might be OK by the evening.. I really don’t like the clowns and no amount of comedy popcorn is going to ease that fear. I suppose it’s quite popular to not like clowns and so I hope a lot of people will identify this terror with me.

Poltergeist (1982)  – this movie used to really frighten me on a massive scale as a child, yeah I was about 4-5 when I first saw it and it disrupt my sleep for a while, but after a conversation about special effects I was OK  considering my other favourite movies at the time were, the thing, teen wolf, nightmare on elm street and alien, I should have already been desensitized? This is why I find it interesting to discuss movies that make it through a persons tougher exterior  Its little strange things that you wouldn’t always expect. As a child the steak and face pulling did it for me, as an adult the clown scene still freaks me out. Its probably a good time to point out that the clowns arms had to be cut as they were actually strangling the child actor and had become knotted.. Spooky? Yeah it doesn’t make me sleep any easier.

Gremlins (1984)  – oh my goth! This movie has terrorized me in the strangest ways over the years. Firstly lets say that I really don’t like little creatures laughing at me while they KILK ME!It really does mess up my day. Sometimes I wonder if audiences really take this in!? They might be “cute” by they are killing you, and laughing at you!

There are a lot of factors to this, after seeing the movie for the first time and being deeply unsettled, I got left with a babysitter who had the movie poster on the back of the door… I stayed awake ALL night, just in case. If anyone is actually following my blog they might have noticed that I mentioned having this movie still in the wrapper..  I had to buy it.. but I still don’t have the courage to open it.

ชัตเตอร์ กดติดวิญญาณ – Shutter (2004) – for years I had no movie scares, shutter it was my biggest dry spell, now its not to say I hadn’t been affected by a movie in all this time. But nothing really affected me. Until shutter, this movie is so good, it really draws you in and has so many shocks and tension. The best thing is that ultimately there is.. I don’t want to give anything away… Lets say it has a lasting effect. I don’t know if it was just the movie or the fact that my other half was sitting next to me freaking out that really did it for me?

Rec (2007) – after shutter I went to see rec. I hadn’t seen anything l like this before, I adore the religious aspect of the “zombies” and as much as I was in awe I was also kacking my pants. It is an entertaining movie and I love the shocks and scares, there were a few areas of research that i looked into afterwards and I managed to track down Javier Botep who is an amazing guy and has a great YouTube channel.

Rec 2 (2009)  – Now I was expecting that part two would try to out scare part one.. and it did! I got it from Blockbusters during the evening but kept hold of it until the following morning so I had the day to get it out of my system before bed.. but it didn’t work!? They managed to outdo themselves, which pleased and distressed me, apart from the awesome firework comedy death scene.. that did lighten the mood for me a little but I do remember not being able to laugh about it for a few days after.

rec2

It might sound strange but lets hope I can add to this list at some point! I am expecting  Mama (2013) to be able to rock my socks if just a little bit..

Movies I’m looking for

There are a lot of movies I only have on video or remember seeing one night on TV without knowing what I was watching and need some help locating. If you have them for sale or can help me locate them then please let me know.

This list will GROW …

  • Angels Egg (1985)
  • Unknown – British prison movie, one inmate smears his schite all over the walls then blood, another more placid inmate with dreads turns from a gentle painter to guard stabber, main character released at the end… any ideas?
  •  Blood Diner
  • The Keep
  • Mirage
  • Detective movie, probably Croatian, main detective wears bright coloured zoot suits
  • Film where a man is trying to commit suicide but everything fails,

Movie Addicts

I found a post on Simon Says Movie Reviews it details the 20 symptoms to look for if you think you or a friend is a movie addict!? It’s probably a good idea if I start here to see if I’ve given my blog the right name.. lets see if I’m addicted?

So I thought I’d give it a go.. see what I score.

1. YOU LOVE MOVIE LISTS
I love lists and I love movies so putting the two together seems only natural for me. I adore looking at other movie lists and now with the power of this blog I shall be writing my own versions! I think everyone should do something similar, obviously everyone who is into movies, there is not right or wrong and it’s great to see someone elses point of view on the movies they have seen.

2. YOU LET YOUR TRUE EMOTIONS OUT
If movies didn’t affect me some way, be it positive or negative I wouldn’t watch them. What’s the point of spending an couple of hours watching something and then your just done with it!? Really someone spent a lot of talent and money to tell a story, appreciate it, live it, learn from it. I want my horror movies to scare me, I want to fall in love and be a million different people though movies.

3. YOU HAVE MOVIES STILL IN THE WRAPPING
Oh yes! Some are movies like Gremlins which I have seen a thousand times and it comes on TV quite a lot so it doesn’t  need to be opened (also it scares me) Other movies are just literally on the to watch pile, sometimes I do like to read the book first, other times they are remakes that people have brought for me. It seems if I say I haven’t watched something that means that I want to but haven’t got around to it yet and I love it when people buy me movies (hint hint)

4. YOU CAN SPOUT OFF YOUR FAVORITE MOVIES ON A WHIM
Mostly.. I will post a list in a short while…

5. YOU HAVE SEEN AT LEAST ONE MOVIE NOBODY ELSE HAS HEARD OF
I’d like to think so, usually movies such as Skinned Deep or In the Aftermath Angles Never Sleep do it, depending on where the person is from I could probably name a “foreign” movie that they have little information about like Den Brysomme Mannen (yeah and I’d do it in the original language for extra brownie points)  otherwise it’s just an old underground movie that was banned and forgotten about.

6. YOU BUY INSTEAD OF DOWNLOAD
I’ve never downloaded a movie..

7. YOU ALWAYS FINISH A MOVIE YOU START; no matter how long, horrendous or boring.
Yes I will always finish a movie, I think it’s only good manners to see the whole story.

8. YOUR LIFE IS A MOVIE
I talk movies all the time, I’ll remember a movie quote before a song lyric. At work I often draw movie scenes on post it notes with quote, I put them in birthday cards..

9. YOU HAVE A WAD OF MOVIE STUBS AS THICK AS A PHONE BOOK
I don’t go to the cinema as often as a lot of other movie lovers, I would like to go more but the price is astoundingly high at the moment, I’m REALLY picky about going to the cinema as well, I only like them when they are empty. But I also don’t often keep the stubs but if I did I’d probably have quite a few. On the other hand if Blockbusters were to print off my DVD rental list, we’d loose a few trees.

10. YOU CAN STAND IN A MOVIE STORE FOR HOURS
I try not stay too long otherwise I end up trying to help people find the right movie or I’ll start to correct them when they are trying to work out who acted in what. Another factor to this is that I don’t need to stay there too long it’s not hard to pick out the few movies I’ve not seen yet.

11. YOU’RE A MOVIE FILTER
If I know someone I can work out what they should watch or rent next,I do often get asked for advice on what to watch or rent.

12. MOVIE POSTERS ARE YOUR WALLPAPER
*looks around* There are quite a few up along with lots of other art work.. I’m not doing to well here am i?

13. YOU HAVE AN OVERFLOW DVD RACK
I make furniture out of DVD covers.

14. YOU NEVER FEEL LAME WATCHING MOVIES ALONE
I usually have to go on my own, movies are my friends LOL.

15. YOU HAVE SEEN A MOVIE AT LEAST 10 TIMES
I’ve seen Lord of the Rings around 600 times and Robocop hit over 110 views and I’ve only had gomiso for two years now. Infact my facebook friends will comment if they haven’t seen it in my feed for a few days… (if you ever want to add me on go miso please do so! my page is here http://gomiso.com/u/katedra

16. YOU NEVER BOYCOTT AN ENTIRE GENRE
American Romantic Comedies.. Actually I try to avoid Comedies, I also try to avoid Romance movies and if I had a choice between a Mongolian black and white short or top blockbuster American rip of schite.. I’m watching the short..

17. YOU LOVE MOVIE TRAILERS
Not when I’m trying to watch a movie but yes I look them up online all the time.

18. YOU LOVE SILENT, FOREIGN AND BLACK AND WHITE FILMS JUST AS MUCH AS ANY OTHER
HELL YEAH! I love all movies … kinda.. american rom coms don’t do it for me.

19. YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BAD MOVIE AND A ‘BAD’ MOVIE AND A BAD MOVIE AND A MOVIE YOU DIDN’T LIKE
I do need to enlarge my vocab but it’s hard to express a bad movie that you like compared to a bad movie that you don’t like and a bad movie that needs to be seen etc..

20. YOU WILL DEFEND A MOVIE YOU LOVE TO THE DEATH
I’ll do time over it too!

Yes doctor.. I’m addicted
