Spotlight – Jeffrey Combs Vol 1

Jeffrey Combs is one of my horror hero’s and I’ll save the long story about his brilliant career and obsession with H P Lovecraft for another article but I’m sure hes no stranger to anyone reading my blog so I’ll dive right in.

Re Animator (1985)

Whenever I think of Jeffery Combs the first movie that comes to mind is Stuart Gordons, Re-Animator. It’s one of those Cult Classics that never gets old and is a staple for any horror fan, even if you don’t like it, it’s cemented its place on the path to horror enlightenment. Combs plays Dr Herbert West a slightly deranged and very determined scientist who may have found a way of bringing the dead back to life he’s energy in this role is outstanding, as he experiments on anything that crosses his path, no man or beast is safe. Things get out of hand in this horror comedy with hellish overtones, but Comb’s love for everything Lovecraft really shines in this role alongside the infamous Barbara Crampton.

The Outsiders (1983)

An american coming of age movie by Frankic Ford Coppola turned out to kickstart a new brat pack into 80’s cinema history. This dream team included C Thomas Howell, who won the Young Artist Award for his performance. following the turbulent lives of teen gangs in rural Oklahoma, the Greasers and Socials, regularly meet up to fight, but during one of these altercations that results in the death of one of the Socials the stakes are raised and the boys are forced to go into hiding but their rivalry carries on.Howell plays a pivotal role and really acts his heart out, bright eyed and energetic he adds a rough edge to some of the otherwise wooden characters in this hard but thrilling drama.

Spotlight – Sly Stallone

Here is a selection of 5 stand out Sylvester Stallone movies, I’ve still not really worked out what these 5 Selected lists are all about, sometimes the top 5 best movies from an actor/director sometimes their worst, or just a select sample of their acting abilities if they have any, for this I’ve chosen my favourite Stallone movies and this time they are in order..

05. Death Race 2000 (1975)

This American Sci Fi sports movie produced by Roger Corman was a cracker in its day, something so influential that it sparked a range of remakes and copy cats over the years. Sylvester Stallone plays Joe Machine Gun Viterbi, who takes part in the Transcontinental Road Race which is televised as a form of morbid entertainment in a dystopian future. It’s not his crowning glory but definitely a role I always remember him, in a bizarre live action wacky race.

Spotlight – Mel Gibson

In the early days I was a big believer that Mr Gibson might just be a brilliant actor given time, but while he took over Hollywood with his quirkness his personal life definitely lost him some fans, but it’s pretty easy for me to set that all aside and focus on his acting and he does constantly reinvent himself and returns with something fresh and new.. Here are 5 Selected Mel Gibson films, probably Volume 1..

Mad Max (1979)

Doing something his epic while starting your movie career will cement you in the history books no matter what crap you produce later on, strangely the charismatic lead went onto some pretty awesome movies while also showing himself up to be a douchebag on so many social occasions, but he remains well loved on the screen.. In Mad Max he plays the quiet loner, a family man who seems to take on a different persona while on the roads running down (quite literally at times) bikers and crooks galore. Max Rockastansky is both brilliant and when pushed, highly dangerous and sadistic, and the man is really pushed to his limits by a brutal biker gang headed by a deranged and brilliant stage actor Hugh Keays Byrne. Going head to head the battle hits new lows as the men target each other and everyone around them slowly picking off by standers until he’s mano et mano. A thrilling indie apocalyptic movie which really brought out the best acting for Mel, although we were never to see this particular persona again.
