Upstream colour (2015)

upstream-colour

Director: Shane Carruth.
Starring: Shane Carruth, Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig, Thiago Martins. USA. 1h 36m

So after the success of Primer (2004) Shane Carruth is back with even more bizarro Lo fi sci fi that he refuses to explain to deeply and again no one questions why they just sit back and let the story take them away.

The story is unusual but is more linear but remains open for interpretation, which can be annoying sometimes but Shane Carruth manages to make it more enthralling by giving the viewer more opportunities to accept his dream like story… that starts out as a nightmare. News for March

I’ve been a bit slack lately, but still watching a huge variety of movies. Sadly my favourite second hand shop will be closing this weekend so I’ll be needed to catch up with the those guys and see what bargains I can buy. In the meantime I’ve still ploughing through Lo Fi Sci Fi movies, Disturbing top 50, Icelandic history of movies, the odd spaghetti western and Scandinavian horror.

Updated the Lo Fi Sci Fi list.

Uploading top 50 most disturbing movies suggested list.

Lo Fi Sci Fi – Update No.1

Okey dokey, I’ve been watching my way through my lo fi sci fi list and I’m getting a distinct feeling for the sub genre.

For me the comedy element doesn’t really do anything for me, but as I don’t own a funny bone it doesn’t come as a shock.

I do enjoy the more darker drama elements of Another Earth and the Sound Of My Voice. The retro visual and aural elements of Beyond The Black Rainbow  and total disregard for all the rules of The FP. So far the only movie from the list which doesn’t seem to fit is First Winter. I certainly wouldn’t include it in the original list of movies that were suggested to me.

The general overall trend and description so far is “cleaver middle American white hipster “underground” culture flicks”. I’m being unfair here  but for me it defines  things. I’m sure this will change as time goes on.

I’ve seen very few ethnic “minorities” in the movies, most of them don’t have any other colour than white, i’m not saying all movies have to display positive racism but it did concern me a little bit 😦

The main ideals that run through this genre are :-Dreaming, Time Travel, Science (duh), Mystery and Love seem to be the general theme foremost. Other common traits are :- Ecoology, Psychology and Doing the Right Thing.

I get the feeling that through these modern moral plays we’re presented with a new set of fairy tales that suggest what you should do to be a good person, that redemption and a world of magic is there to await you.

I still have a few more to go and a couple to add to the list. Further details and reviews to come.

Lo fi Sci Fi – My Introduction to the genre

I picked up Primer (2004)  several years ago and it spend a great deal of time on my “to watch” pile. I could tell from the blurb that it was going to be a movie I needed to watch with a clear head and to pay full attention to, so I gave it some special time.

I was severely confused from beginning to end but I blame the desperados.. So I watched it again. I liked the style, I adored how the film brought forward great ideas without having to blow a huge budget on effects.

It wasn’t until I found (by total accident) another film, Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) that I discovered a whole new genre.. Lo Fi Sci Fi. So I’m going to emerge myself in it for a while and see what I can discover about it.

It does seem to be the basic ideas that a student would bring to the table without the board room expensive lights show. A way of going back to basics with the prime ideas of science fiction without huge movie sets and monsters (although i think there might be monsters). From what I have seen there has been an emphasis on the human in the future and the fragility of how we can cope with loosing what we were in the past.

A more precise definition comes from http://lofiscifi.com/

Movies that have more speculation than spectacular effects. More focused on big ideas than big budgets.

For now I have a few titles about 20 or so that I am working through, some I have already seen, others I am now searching for. Reviews to come.
