Wer (2013)

wer-xi

Director : William Brent Bell
Starring :  A.J. Cook,  Brian Scott O’Connor, Simon Quarterman, Sebastian Roché,Vik Sahay . USA. 1h 29m.

A modern day werewolf movie that awkwardly slots into the found footage genre. From the director who gave us another found footage horror only a year before, Devil Inside (2012) and sadly this film makes lots of the same mistakes but it also quite enjoyable.
There aren’t many werewolf found footage movies, in fact I can’t think of any, but this film isn’t pure found footage,  it’s  just a bog standard film with a few clips filmed via security cameras for added unrest.

Starting out from cam footage, a family are attacked by an unknown ferocious beast, if you hadn’t seen a trailer (or read this review) you’d have thought it was a bear on meth, it’s such a violent scene. Later through news clips it’s announced that Talan Gwynek (Brian Scott O’Connor) has been arrested for the murders. This is when Kate Moore (A. J Cook) steps in, to protect Talan as he’s not had a fair representation. While interviewing the curious man she starts to realise that he might just be capable of the murders, it’s not until after Talan is tested for Porphyria that Kate and her team including Gavin Flemyng (Simon Quarterman) start to realise just what they are faced with and how the werewolf curse is already affecting them…

Horror Shorts – Vermin, The Passenger and Hi

I’ve decided that it’s better if I double or triple up the horror shorts as doing individual posts will just take forever so expect a few triple bills from now on.

Vermin

Director : Danny Donahue (@dannyfdonahue) Starring: Casey Fichtner. USA.2015
Duration : 2:06
Extremely short but strangely on point, this thrilling silent horror short uses amazing camera angles and sound to fool the viewer and enhance the scares. There is a fair amount of tension and build up to a rewarding ending. A young woman is trying to hang a picture on the wall when strange noises start coming from a cupboard then the tools go missing. It doesn’t sound to scary but even the name of this creepy tale lead you off guard for a sinister scare, for the tiny timing it’s worth a watch. It’s simple, short and very effective.
Rating 6/10 Continue reading Horror Shorts – Vermin, The Passenger and Hi

Monsters (2010)

monsters

Director : Gareth Edwards
Writer : Gareth Edwards
Starring : Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able UK  1h 34m

While going  through a healthy size list of Lofi Scifi movies i found a series of beautiful and haunting movies, mostly dealing with time and space travel, but not many dealing with aliens, than I finally got around to watching  Monsters which was an answer for the missing aliens but also maintained the haunting and emotional side of this genre.

A NASA deep space probe crash lands in Mexico, spreading extraterrestrial life form into north Mexico and America, a wall is soon erected to keep the United States safe, and both armies battle to keep the alien life contained in an infected zone. A photojournalist Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy) is tasked with the job of collecting and escorting his editors daughter  Samantha Wynden (Whitney Able)back to the USA before the infected zone is totally closed off, he finds her in a hospital and the start their journey home, but the train they are on is stopped as the tracks are damaged and the pair then have to hitch hike for the rest of the journey home. WENDIGO WINDIGO…

WENDIGO/WINDIGO MOVIES

My horror bro The Creepy Critter mentioned Wendigo Wednesday’s on his/it’s blog and that got me thinking about Wendigo movies.. It’s an odd subject as they are portrayed in many different ways in many different movies. Some they are spirits, other movies just another name for a werewolf…

What’s the dictionary definition? “Well a Wendigo is a creature appearing in legends of the Algonquian peoples, it is thought of variously as a malevolent cannibalistic spirit that could possess humans or a monster that human could physically transform into.”

Sounds pretty cool huh! Personally I don’t think any movie has done it full justice yet, but out of the ones I have seen I think Ravenous would be my favourite.

I would love to see a movie where the Windigo/Wendigo is shown as a possession that spreads from one person to the next feeding as it goes. Similar to the Thing (1982) or Evil Dead (1981).
