Robocop (2014)

Director: José Padilha
Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, Michael Kenneth Williams, Abbie Cornish . USA. 1h 57m

It’s taken me a long time to watch this as I have such a deep connection with the original film, for me Robocop is a saint and I was almost insulted that anyone would dare to remake the movie, but this is a very loose remake that pretty much relies on you having seen the original too get make sense of some of the benial content. But don’t take my low rating as a sign that I am a total fangirl of the Verhoeven classic, I have taken a lot of energy to think outside of my little box.

In this rendition of the tragic life of Alex Murphy (Kinnaman), he’s a brilliant righteous cop who is on a questionable case that keeps giving him and his partner Lewis (Williams) the slip. Continue reading Robocop (2014)

Robocop – the making of a martyr

When I was a youngster I had a copy of Robocop on Video, along with a lot of my friends and we all agreed that there were two scenes that we had watched frame for frame and probably wore our videos’ bald for those two scenes, not even the tracking could save them. Robocop 2 (1990)

robocop-2

Director: Irvin Kershner.
Starring: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O’Herlihy, Belinda Bauer, Tom Noonan, Gabriel Damon. USA. 1h 57m.

After the amazing success of Robocop we were blessed with a sequel, and on this rare occasion we got a semi decent film. Picking up not too long after the first film in things haven’t really changed in Old/New Detroit. We find out hero more integrated into the police department and accepted by society. But obviously everything has to go wrong, OCP are ever greedy and wanting more control of the city and they are also interested in creating Robocop 2 (shock horror). The biggest drug on the street is Nuke and the man who invented it, Cain (Noonan), and his gang are Public Enemy No.1, and therefore Robo’s biggest enemy, along with the terror they bring, Murphy also has to contend with a bigger and better and more psychotic Robocop 2. Robocop (1987)

robocop

Director: Paul Verhoeven .
Starring: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O’Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer . USA. 1h 43m.

I’d like to start this off just announcing that Robocop has been one of my all time favourite movies since i first saw it, the effect has been massive on my day to day life, so I’ll try to keep this review short but I could probably write a book on Robocop.

Comparisons could be made between this robotic man of justice and many hero’s and monsters from the past, being created by man from bloody remains and what could be seen as (techno)magic he is akin to a sci fi golem. Either way the film became an instant cult classic inspiring a few sequels a lame TV show and much music shenanigans. Continue reading Robocop (1987)

5 Selected – Peter Weller

robocop-1987-02

 01.Robocop (1987)

One of the best action sci-fi movies of all time, and starring the unusual Weller, not someone you’d assume as being an action hero, he is lucky to outsmart the bullet (pun intended) and become one of the greatest robotic antihero’s and part time scumbag (explanation coming). Alex Murphy was just the average nice guy until he got blown to pieces by a violent gang, his body, claimed by OCP, a futuristic corporation that runs the Detroit City Metro. Police, who transform him into an unthinking cyborg, until he regains his memory and starts chasing the gang who killed him, and those who control the gang. A cult classic with tons of spin offs, comics, animated shows films and series. Robocop harnessed many guises for us, as a metallic golem, a lone samurai or a gunman rolling into town to put things straight we can all sympathize with him. There are tons of deeper issues covered in the films, including the rise of fascism through the media, a brilliant film that keeps giving. 10/10 Continue reading 5 Selected – Peter Weller

5 Selected – Ray Wise

Ray Wise

I have to admit that I have a teeny crush on Ray Wise,  but who couldn’t fall for his charm, the tall dark handsome stranger of anyone’s nightmares.  Generally I manage to see him in a lot of horror movies,  but that’s obvious due to the nature of my blog,  I’m rather partial to horror! I really think Mr Wise should have had more lead roles and I’m impressed with his constant contributions no matter how small but sadly the one character I’d love to see him as; the devil, was in a TV show and as we all know I don’t watch tv… I guess I’m going to have to make an exception.

The iconic 80s sci fi had a host of amazing characters, literally every one influenced some film or show at point, while Ray didn’t play the most influential person, he did have some memorable scenes including a fight with Robocop on the dance floor of an industrial club, shooting Robocop in the chest and generally being one of the coolest members of Clarence’s gang. 10/10 [REVIEW] Continue reading 5 Selected – Ray Wise
