1 Life on the Limit (2013)

Director: Paul Crowder Starring: Michael Fassbender, Niki Lauda, James Hunt, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher. USA.1h 52m

An insanely personal insight into the creation and golden years of formula one, the world’s most glamourous and dangerous sport, the characters who have pioneered the safety and key changes in the sport are honored in a well crafted documentary.

Being less on the side of stats and figures, dates and events, the main focus of the film is to connect some of the lifelong players’ memories of the sport and some of the fallen heroes with a humbling dedication to their hours of daring death on every corner.

Playing Away (1986)

Director: Horaces Ove Starring: Norman Beaton, Nicholas Farrell, Brian Bovell, Ross Kemp, Gary Beadle, Trevor Thomas, Ram John Holder,Bruce Purchase, Joseph Marcell, Patrick Holt, Neil Morrissey. UK. 1h 40m

The beautiful game of cricket is the focus of a witty tale that highlights the ridiculous nature of racism and plesantary of just getting along and being a good person or at least a sports person. Somewhere in Ove’s little hidden gem of a movie, there’s a nod to the empowerment of being a team player, noting how the games give the population a sense of becoming a better person.

Foxcatcher (2014)

Director: Bennett Miller
Starring: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller, Anthony Michel Hall .USA. 2h 14m

My first viewing of Foxcatcher was quite surreal, I was more mesmerized by how different the cast looked, Carell’s beak nose and Ruffalo’s hairline are almost mystical, so much great effort went into the prosthetics and character development. This high level of glamour is only a part of a riveting tale of shocking depravity, orchestrated by a filthy rich individual pulling the strings in his own dangerous game, involving the USA Wrestling entry into the 1988 Olympic games. The Cage Fighter (2018)

Director: Jeff Unay.
Starring. Joe Carman, Callie Carman, Mia Carman, Delanee Carman, Kira Carman, Norinda Reed, Clayton Hoy, Vernon Beach. USA. 1h 21m.

I have to admit that I didn’t really research this movie, and just assumed it was the Wrestler of the MMA universe, just a movie filmed in a documentary style about a fighter returning to regain some glory, but it wasn’t really until a candid scene where the protagonist Joe Carman is arguing with his father, that I realised… these people really aren’t’ acting and shit just got real!

So this awkward and insightful movie follows Joe, who allows cameras film his return to glory, the blue collar worker who breaks his promise to his family and begins his training to get back into the ring and unleash his unique brand of MMA destruction, the only problem is that Joe is 40 and is not only risking his health and life, he’s risking everything for a sport that has moved on without him. One scene sums it up, Joe is in the parking lot, turning a huge tire over and being spotted by a guy as he manhandles the rubber, “How old are you, 24? “Joe responds wistfully, “Oh I wish I was 24 again“. Awaydays (2009)

Director: Pat Holden

On the Wirral in the grim early years of Margaret Thatcher’s premiership, the opportunities for thrill seeking young men looking to escape 9 to 5 drudgery.

Carty wants to become part of the “pact”; a footie hooligan group from the Wirral, he shoe horns his way into the gang via the acid tripping, dope smoking big dreaming Elvis, who takes him under his wing. Carty has some big dreams on how the Pact is run;  but without much experience he thinks he’s a fully fledged hooligan. There are members of the Pact who are willing to help his and others willing to give him a trial by fire. Young Carty never quite sees the bigger picture of ever knows where he stands.

awaydays4001

You get the impression that Carty is a angry young man who loves to fight but through his confusing relationship with Elvis and a hot temper he just shows himself up to be a fool, which in turn sends him over the edge and the cycle goes on again.

I adore the cinematography in this film, while focusing in on the strained relationship of the two young men it still shows the grim scenery of “oop north” with the added depressive OST you start to connect with the pacts need to go out and fight.

Commonly this film gets slated as being boring, he’s a drama, it’s not about the glorification of football hooliganism, it’s more of a coming of age movie. Carty wants so desperately to be a part of a group that aren’t willing to accept him. He gets so caught up with being around the group that he misses all of the dangers.

OST :  The soundtrack for this film is amazing and is worth having! It includes Cabaret Voltaire, Joy Division,  Ultravox, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, OMD, The Jam, Teardrop Explodes,

Q :  “Well roody doody carty la”

BS : I adore the scene where the boys are buying music and nut the goth, I’m a goth but that guy was beggin for it. * My sisters favourite scene is the epic acid trip that Elvis has. I think it’s also worth pointing out that there is a great pivotal scene in the confessional box.

T : this is more of a goof, spotted by my sister. When Carty gets Elvis on the guest list, Elvis is wearing a “The Crow” t-shirt depicting Brendon Lee as Eric Draven . That movie came out in 1994 whereas this movie is set in 1979.

THE BOYKA CONNECTION

I have to thank my friend “The Bear” for lending me Undisputed II (2006), what an amazing movie it is! It soon prompted me to watch Undisputed (2002) which was a load of dry ole balls.. No matter it happens sometimes, although if I had watched Undisputed (2002) first then I probably would have avoided the second movie… *shudders* Imagine that a world without Boyka! NOOOOO!!! So eventually I managed to find the most up to date movie, Undisputed III (2010) and DING DONG! It was bloody astounding, and that was all down to our boy behind bars.. Yuri Boyka! What a champion! BOYKA BOYKA! BOYKA BOYKA!

image

I know I’m not the only one who finds they are perched on the sofa chanting BOYKA BOYKA! Through out the fight scenes and I’m certainly not the only one who gets all excited when he tells yanks to “shut the hell up” or “you need to shut your f*cking mouth” and I could watch him beating seven bells of hell out of everyone all night long. It was great seeing a mini Boyka role in the Tournament (2009) even if it was about 2 minutes long

Even in the second movie where he is supposed to be a brutal stamp collecting monster you still love him and his kick ass/get schit done attitude. Don’t get me wrong, George Chambers (Michael Jai White) was a great guy, helping out all those poor people and cripples but Boyka stole the show. So much so that the third movie was about HIM!

Basically Scott Adkins could play the Boyka character forever and we would still love him, imagine where this could go? Undisputed 8 Boyka the father, Boyka saves the world!? Boyka VS Mothra!! Why the hell don’t I have a Boyka T-Shirt!? I need action dolls and bed spreads and I think small children all over the world need to stop being so deluded that kindness will get them everywhere and take stab at being the most complete fighter in the world.

JOHNNY MNEUMONIC (Science Fiction, Action, Cyberpunk 1995) D: Robert Longo W: William Gibson 1h 43m. USA

TAGLINE: The futures most wanted fugitive.

A data courier, carrying a data package literally in side his head to large to hold for long, must deliver before he dies. OK Straight up I’ve never liked this movie, my best advice is to read the short story, there is much more going on, better characters and a more memorable ending. On the plus side this movie boasts a great cast including Ice-T and Henry Rollins (how musical) and the best performance Dolph has given to date. I feel that Beat Takeshi was thrown in as everyone associates cyberpunk with japan. Lets face it, anything taken from a short story can’t be written into a majorly long film, it fails most of the time, The Box (2009) and Screamers(1995) could have been pretty short films and not have lost any impact. So Johnny (Keanu) is a yuppie on the run with data that can change the world in his head, the Yuppie has to go and dwell with the street low lives in order to try and achieve his mission and to stay alive. The only problem is Keanu at his scariest is like a Care Bare with boxing gloves, I could have preferred to see Rollins punch his light out early on in the film and saved this day himself and all in under 1 hour. This movie could have has a memorable soundtrack but it sucks ass too. Q: “and it’s still our first date” R: Fortress(1992), Hackers(1995), Blade Runner (1982)

FOOTBALL FACTORY (Sport, crime, action 2004) D: Nick Lowe W: John King 1h 31m UK

TAGLINE : What else are you gonna do on a Saturday.

The football factory is more than just a study of the English obsession with football violence, its about men looking for armies to join. I’m expecting Danny Dyers face to bleed, an Indie Britpop OST, violence and the word c*nt. BINGO! I’m not saying this movie is totally predictable,it does deliver a few additional qualities that I really enjoyed among the usual football hooligan story. There is a powerful mini story with Bill, Dudley Sutton’s character, the movie boasts that it’s not all about football hooliganism but about men fighting a war, then you have Bill who has fought for his country in a war and is confronted by idiots who hold fascist views thinking they are on the same par as him. They don’t realise that they are the people ole Bill was fighting against. He sums it up in one quote “I don’t like him, I fought in the war against fascist views like his.” This helps demonstrate how pathetic and unaware the youth are today. Danny dyer has a few prophetic dreams during the course of the movie which reminds me of the ones similar to Valhalla Rising (2009). And surprisingly the most unsuspecting character has the noblest speech!

Q: “Oh, we have a few vans out on jobs most of the time. Yeah, sure it’s always busier in the summer, of course. Nothing like a soaring temperature to help the work, you know what I mean? Anyway, most of the time I just sit around the office waiting for the weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I love the money the job pays. But my real passion lies in kicking people’s f*cking heads in at football. See, I got to channel it somewhere. As you can probably tell by my bulging stomach, I don’t participate in too many sporting activities. And I don’t do drugs. Well, that’s not entirely true, but not a lot. So I got to have my release in something, and a good fu*king fight seems like the best way. Wouldn’t you agree? Maybe not. At least I wouldn’t be walking around like you lot, fucking horrible cunts with sticks shoved up you’re a*ses trying to pretend your little suburban nightmare’s all right. Then again, I suppose it just depends which way you look at it.”

It’s not my all time favourite football hooligan movie but I did enjoy it. the little caption adverts that speak directly to Danny Dyer and the ending which details what the characters did after the film were quite entertaining.

 CLASS OF 1999
(Science Fiction, Horror, Action 1990) D/W : Mark Lester W: C.Courtney Joyner 1h 39m.

TAGLINE: The ultimate teaching machine… out of control.
Robot teachers have been secretly placed in the schools where the students have run riot.

With a stunning cast and believable story line it’s easy to see why this movie is a cult classic. How many people wanted to sneak back into school and blow their teachers away!? This film justifies that dream.

Then came…

GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS 2
(Sport, Crime, Drama 2010) D: Jesse V Johnson W: Jay Obrien – 1h 34m.

TAGLINE: Fight for Respect!

Following the deadly climax of Green Street Hooligans” several member of the West Ham firm and numerous members of Millwall end up in jail…
So technically this a prison revenge movie fuelled by football hooligans, it should be gritty and violent, sadly it’s a slow paced movie but there is a lot of smacking about and blood. There is a good dose of dodgy prison guards because we all know they are all bent and a surprise cameo by Matthias Hues and Timothy Murphy. It’s a pale comparison to the first movie but it’s OK. I was gagging for it to end but did enjoy all the double dealing.
