Spotlight – Dominic Cooper

Dominic Edward Cooper has always been one of those actors who, while working alongside some brilliantly trained and classical actors, is able to match them, but I feel if and when he’s given a leading role he loses a little bit of his strange presence. A lot of people question his ethnicity but from what I can find online he’s just brit, although with dark hair and olive features he’s been able to play a range of other ambiguous races in his films, but remainsone of those average white guy actors aka Your Guide to the Indistinguishable British Dudes as featured in Vulture https://www.vulture.com/2014/10/luke-evans-looks-like-orlando-bloom.html

Here are his top films in order..

04.Stratton (2017)

In this pint sized James Bond styled movie, Cooper plays John Stratton, a British SBS operative on some world saving mission. He plays the quiet type of saviour who likes to get his head down and be tough, and in an attempt to maybe make him more human he spends just as much time trying to get over the evil things he is forced to do to save Queen and Country. The film seemed to have been set up to be part of a franchise but it wasn’t accepted as well as expected, probably the fact that part of the highlight showdown was on a double decker bus!? 3/10 {REVIEW}

Spotlight – Tony Todd

Best known for his role in the cult classic Candyman that is still inspiring new directors to this day, the inspiring story from Clive Barker was really brought to life by the the 6’ 5”  gentle giant, Toddy Todd who, while not leading as many films as any fan would like, when he does appear in a movie , not matter how short to long his role, really makes an impact in any film and continues to support a thriving horror community.

06. Murder Set Pieces (2004)

Video Store Guy

Notable one of the more modern Video Nasty’s, Murder Set Pieces was a wildly banned horror. Directed by Nick Palumbo it features a deranged photographer (Sven Garrett) travels and documents his serial killer lifestyle. While he’s out slashing prostitutes and trying to bed underage girls he pops into an adult video store looking for a particular snuff movie named Nutbag (a reference to Palumno’s earlier movie) , Tony Todd happens to be the Clerk and the confrontation blows up in epic proportions! Tony is one of a few notable names however it’s generally slated for being disgusting, vile and disturbing, and this is why I love it so much!

Spotlight – Hugh Jackman

So I set myself challenge. List 5 awesome Huge Jackman movies and don’t mention any Marvel films..

01.Van Helsing (2004)

The framed monster hunter returns for some kind of gothic steampunk revival, looking and feeling much like another Underworld movie, the movie co stars Kate Beckinsale and features Richard Roxburgh as an unusual choice for Count Dracula but one that surprisingly works so well. Strangely the movie works on some levels. With comedy buffering each scare the movie was always aimed at being a family favourite and the cast get full marks for managing to keep a straight face through half of the ridiculous antics. Otherwise it is a fun and enjoyable adventure.

Spotlight – Daniel Day Lewis

As I get a lot of negativity for my choice in favourite movies, I thought I’d go with an actor who has retired (hopefully just for now) and has a pretty good short track record, I can’t go wrong with this.. can I?

In the Name of the Father (1993)

A star studded cast take a brave step in re creating the incredibly dark story of Gerry and Patrick Conlon, who were falsely imprisoned for the 1974 Guildford Pub Bombings. Conlons ability not to be beaten down by years of imprisonment and watching his father wither away and die incarcerated isn’t the easiest for a method actor such as Lewis to get into but the results are outstanding. Watching the change from Gerry’s frivolous life on the outside to years of fighting his case and adjusting to life on the inside is mind blowing. Starring alongside another veteran Pete Postlewaithe as Patrick, the two respectively bounce off each other like a classic duo, they seem so comfortable as the raw emotions flow from both equally. Lewis spends nights sleeping in a cell, asking for the crew to throw water and verbal abuse at him to prepare for the role. Despite the liberties taken with the truth, it’s still such a chilling and powerful movie with damned near perfect performances. Continue reading Spotlight – Daniel Day Lewis

Spotlight – Tom Towels RIP

Sadly the charismatic Tom Towels past away on 2nd April. I thought it was a terrible late April Fools Day joke. But sadly the great actor who perfected the art of being a scumbag is no longer with us. Here are my 5 selected Tom Towels movies.

05.Fortress (1992)wpid-tom-towles-fortress.png

Director Stuart Gordon needed a few prized assholes to play tough bullies in this futuristic prison flick, one role went to the chiseled Vernon Wells, and his trusty obnoxious side kick is the giggling Tom Towels. He knows how to be a prick although is eventually recruited onto to the good guys team after the untimely death of his partner and still remains to be a prick! A memorable part for Tom and a great sci fi flick. 7/10

Spotlight – James Caan

I’ve always appreciated the hairy Bronx beast’s film presence over the years, despite him being one of the few actors who seem a little too relaxed playing the bad guy. He really does have that edge of bigot but I’ve never witnessed any faults in his acting so it was hard to narrow things down to 5 selected performances out of the 120+ titles he’s worked on. So in no particular order… Continue reading Spotlight – James Caan
